Vanda & A Shorebreak Ramp

Local shaper Vanda stumbled upon this rare high tide shorebreak last night. The east swell threw up a couple of fun launchpads for him to boost from. Jan Juc lensmen Nige Drought and Ocean Grove photog Ed Sloane teamed up to work both the land and water angles.

Weekend Wrap

After more than a month of below par surf, the last weekend in January saw the strongest groundswell of summer sweep down the coast and light up waves that had remained otherwise unsurfable for almost two months. Dawn on the much-hyped Sunday was extremely crowded despite suffering from a dose of morning sickness, but by mid-morning a strong northeasterly had groomed the conditions. Solid lines stacked to the horizon and lit up the coast from 13th Beach to Winki.

Steve Arklay captured the dawn patrol whilst Ed Sloane shot the arvo shift.

Shark In Shallow Waters At 13th Beach

Last Friday on dusk a shark made its way into shallow waters midway along 13th Beach at Boings. The creature swam so close to shore that it hovered on the sandbar, rubbing against local surfer Pat Lockie’s leg as he waited for a set. When Pat felt the shark’s nudge, instinctively, he swung his hand down into the water to defend himself. The shark managed to clinch his hand in it’s jaw but luckily Pat was able to rip his hand from the shark’s mouth emerging with only several deep cuts and a short visit to the surgeons table.

Whilst it has not been confirmed what species of Shark was so close to shore, one newspaper reported it to be a Tiger shark, which seems unlikely as the Tiger shark is not native to Victorian waters or climate.

2009 Winkipop Recollections

Winter 2009 wasn’t full of great highlights or anything akin the renowned winter of ‘06, but we thought it might be nice to be reminded that we do cop groundswells in Victoria, the reefs do break overhead, crowds do slim and most importantly, unknown surfers in hoods do beautiful, drawn out bottom turns on long Winki walls.

FOAM Magazine issue 3 will be running a photo feature of winter 2009 and will be available from Feb 25th.

Beachy Bliss

Sometime last week 23-year-old filmmaker Ed Saltau set out in search of some hollow Victorian beach breaks to test his new Go Pro HD video camera. Whilst the test run wasn’t without a couple of hiccups, some gold was captured. Look out for more of Saltau’s work in coming weeks.
